Taking Care/The Water Works #2

This week I send my apologies to you... I'm sorry.

So I'm going to be honest with you, this week has been hard. It has hurt a lot. So much so that I've had to cancel rehearsals, cancel going into work and cancel seeing my friends. To put it bluntly it has been shit.

HOWEVER, 'recovery is the best revenge' and I'm hoping that Taking Care/The Water Works is a step, our step, towards recovery. It may be tough now, but in the long run it'll be worth it.

When I decided to apply for The Student Lock Festival I didn't realise that exploring our emotions and recovery as a creative team would be so difficult, let alone exploring my own personal experience on the matter. I thought we could always maintain a distance from it all. However, there is a fine line between exploring our experiences to recover and harmfully re-living our trauma. I was naive and foolish to assume that this would be an easy ride. It most certainly is not...

And this is why I, Charlie, Artistic Director of Jump the Puddle am apologising to you all. I have set out on a journey that we as a team were not prepared for. We are scared and, like most projects, we do not know what we're doing. But we're trying and we are getting there (even though we don't know where there is).

I apologise because this show has not turned out how I set it out to be. Yes all projects change, but this has changed RADICALLY. So much so that I don't know what it is anymore. It has changed styles, changed tone, changed performers. It is not what you have been told to believe it is. It is constantly changing and right now we have no control over it.

So I'm sorry if you expected something polished. I'm sorry if you expected something solid. I'm sorry if you even expected something finished and I'm sorry if you expected it to be an emotional, personal and deep account of recovery from rape. Right now that is too difficult.

Maybe it will always be too difficult?

I hope you understand.

I'm not sure Taking Care/The Water Works will ever be in a place where it is polished, solid or finished. That's just the nature of art. It's certainly the nature of this project. It always keeps on going. Ever changing.

I ask of you, our audience, to come to The Student Lock Festival on the 5th June @ CPT with an open mind. I ask you to come and be sensitive. I ask you come to support and give feedback to help Taking Care/The Water Works grow. I ask you come to be a part of our recovery. I ask you to remember this apology... I'm sorry.

Tickets are on sale now: https://www.cptheatre.co.uk/production/student-lock-festival/

I hope to see you all there xoxo
